When looking for DVD movies for sale, there are few great places to look online. Amazon.com and BestBuy.com are two of the best when it comes to expansive libraries, however a smaller site like Buy.com often has better deals. A lot of the time when searching for DVD movies for sale, you will find that they are sold in discounted bundles based on genre. For example, when I purchased Braveheart, it came in a box set with The Patriot, another Mel Gibson war epic. This is a great way to save money (usually get two for the price of one) while getting an extra movie in the process. Since the movies are often closely related, there is a good chance you will like the extra movie. If you end up not liking the first movie, however, then chances are you may not care for the second!
If you are looking for some alternatives to purchasing DVD movies for sale, some of your options include Blu-Ray, HD-DVD and VHS. Of the aforementioned three options, I would only recommend Blu-Ray as a practical alternative. Blu-Ray discs play high definition movies as opposed to standard definition on regular DVDs. As a result, they are on average more expensive. HD-DVD technically is similar to Blu-Ray in that its quality is high definition, but Blu-Ray has emerged as the industry standard and is more widespread. Most next generation DVD players for sale will accept Blu-Ray formatting, however may not accept HD-DVDs. If you see a site having a sale on HD-DVDs, it’s probably because no one wants them and it is not a coincidence. Movies on VHS (standard video tapes) you can still use, but are simply outdated. They are definitely a cheaper alternative, but the quality of a VHS movie does not compare to a DVD. They are also more difficult to store, as they take up more space.
DVD movies are relatively easy to keep in good condition. One option includes keeping the movies in their original case and putting them on a shelf or DVD stand. This actually creates a great aesthetic effect since the colors of the DVD cases are so vivid (probably since they want you to buy it). Just make sure not to scratch the disc, as that will cause permanent damage. After you are done playing the DVD, make a habit of putting the disc back in its case.
If you are looking for some good movies to watch, check out a list of Academy Award Best Picture nominations. Most films that are nominated for a Best Picture Oscar deserve to be. Another place to look for good movies is the IMDB (internet movie database) top 250 films of all time. The list can be found here: http://www.imdb.com/chart/top. It is a great list and most of the movies on there deserve to be there, however it is a little biased. Cult classics tend to be skewed higher (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings) than they should be. For the most part, this list is excellent though.
With the emergence of Blu-Ray, prices of DVD movies for sale have dropped. Just a few years ago, it was very common to find DVDs costing upwards of $25. Now that Blu-Ray charges prices like that, DVD prices have dropped to about $15. If you go to major stores like Wal-Mart, you can also find DVDs as cheap as $5.
